Kevin Henderson & Henrik Jansberg, The Piping Centre, Glasgow
**** (4 stars)
"Celtic Connections has an admirable track record in show casing talented young traditional musicians and fostering international collaborations. But with so many items jostling daily for brochure space, some concerts are perhaps inevitably going to be undersold, and so it was with what turned out to be one of the festivals intimate gems.(...)
Jansbergs menuets, reels, polkas, mazurkas and the awkward but tameable sextua featured fiddling of grace and precision, and on a fandango from the pen of a fiddler known as Jutlands Paganini, soloist and accompanist reversed roles for Zeeberg to take up the intricate melody with real style. De Barra is a superbly inventive accompanist, whether playing a ”bass pinkie” style or ricocheting chords alongside Hendersons zestful fiddling on the fearsome and aptly named Fiddlers Cramp.
Allthough the two fiddlers had met at Tonder Festival in Denmark last summer, they’d only really got together properly earlier in the day, which made their full- sounding and thight reading of the Fiddlers Bid favourite The New Rigged Ship all the more commendable."
